Understanding a Competency Question
Competency Questions bring your Competency Matrix directly into the Performance Review process.
By linking competency expectations to an employee's assigned Level, ThriveSparrow automatically presents the most relevant competency questions during a review. This enables level-specific evaluations, ensuring every employee is assessed against the expectations defined for their level in the organisation.
With Competency Questions, reviewers have a consistent framework for evaluating performance, making reviews more structured, objective, and aligned with your organization's competency model. The Competency Matrix defines the expectations, and Competency Questions ensure those expectations are reflected in every review.
Adding a Competency Question in a Performance Review

When you select Competency-Based Questions, ThriveSparrow displays all the competencies available in your organization. Choose the competencies you want to include in the current performance review, or deselect any that aren't relevant.

Once added to a review, evaluators will only see the competencies that are applicable to the employee they are evaluating.
For example, if John's assigned level and department map to the Communication and Teamwork competencies, those are the only competency questions that will be presented to the evaluator. This ensures every employee is assessed against the competencies relevant to level.

Together, Levels, the Competency Matrix, and Competency Questions create a structured, consistent, and competency-driven performance review process.

- Competency Matrix defines the competencies and expectations for each level. Learn More
- Competency Questions bring those expectations directly into the performance review, ensuring reviewers assess employees against the competencies relevant to their level.
By connecting these three features ensures every employee is evaluated against the competencies that are relevant to their level, resulting in more objective, fair, and meaningful performance reviews.
